17 slouchy, stylish, and surprisingly freaky trousers to help you ditch the sad weekday khakis.

17 Objectively Correct Reasons to Go All-In on Dress Pants This Winter (4)

Say it with us, folks: men's dress pants aren’t just for dressy occasions. It’s time to stop associating tailored trousers solely with job interviews, important meetings, and weddings—and start wearing ‘em wherever you goddamn please. Right now, there’s nothing more exhilarating than stepping out into the world feeling wholly put together, and there’s no easier way to do that than by pulling on a pair of perfectly-fitting dress pants.

The Best Dress Pants Hit List

But GQ, how does one wear dress pants without people asking me why I'm so dressed up? First of all, dressing more formally ain't a bad thing. Second, styling dress pants outside of their intended context just takes a simple flip of the mental switch: wear them like you would a pair of jeans, and swap out the starch-stiff dress shirt for a T-shirt, a well-worn hoodie, or a chunky sweater. As for the shoes, anything goes: sneakers, loafers, mules, boots—hell, even some real-deal dress shoes work as long as you score ‘em from a fittingly enlightened next-gen cobbler. When in doubt, a pair of trim (not quite slim, and definitely not skinny) trousers are always a safe bet, but there’s a reason menswear's silhouette du jour these days is loose and wide: If your dress pants are slouchy enough to look right at home at a skate park, absolutely no one will wonder if you accidentally wore your work clothes to the bar.

Convinced yet? A whole world of proper trousers awaits you, and we’ve selected 17 of the finest men’s dress pants to get you started. Your legs can thank us later.

      Stòffa

      Single-Pleat Trousers

A lot of brands aspire toward a utopian world of casual tailoring, but rarely do they achieve that. Stòffa does. These dress pants feature a luxurious cotton twill fabric that's been lightly brushed for a peachy hand, a relaxed silhouette with a classic single pleat front, and elegant adjustable tabs at the waist. They're the kind of pants you'd expect to see on an impossibly swaggy Italian grandpa, with a slouchy polo and woven leather sandals.

It's difficult to design a pair of elastic waist trousers look like the actually belong at a black tie event, but if you're the design duo behind The Row, it's a cinch.

      Paul Smith

      Multi-Check Wool Straight Leg Trousers

Britain's madcap color theorist knows when to tone down his palette, too. That's not to say Paul Smith's ultra-sharp trousers are boring—the opposite, in fact. All that means is that the subtle checked pattern won't elicit eyeballs at the office, but will look right at home when you ditch the dress shirt and loafers for a silky button-up and kicky boots.

      Todd Snyder

      Knit Herringbone Sutton Suit

Most dress pants are made of woven fabric, but Todd Snyder somehow managed to make a knit fabric that has all the natural stretch and comfort of your favorite T-shirt, but the look of an actual dress pant. Who said suits were uncomfortable?

      Banana Republic

      Norte Velvet Pleated Pant

When the event you're attending calls for either black tie or—god forbid—'dress to impress', a pair of velvet dress pants will pass muster in both situations. These sultry velvet pants from Banana Republic have a great tailored silhouette that's trim but not tight and will look ace with a pair of patent loafers or even with just a plain white tee and Sambas, treated like a swanky pair of track pants.
