Campus is full of activities and there's always something to do. New Haven may not be the greatest city in America, but that just makes students be more active on campus and creates a sense of community! 3. #3 Best Colleges for International Relations in AmericaStanford UniversityStanford, CA·4 Year·Rating 4.1 out of 5 1,285 reviewsGraduate Student: Attending Stanford has been a mix of excitement and challenges. Going to games is a blast, with plenty of sports activities. Professors are generally great but lean politically one way, limiting viewpoint diversity. As a research-focused institution, one-on-one time with professors is limited, though humanities professors are more approachable. Lecturers are decent, reflecting the research emphasis.Campus life can be slow, so finding your group is crucial. The campus is huge and beautiful, with great weather and all necessary amenities. The social scene is limited, and Palo Alto, though affluent, is not very exciting. San Francisco and Oakland are 45 minutes to an hour away, offering more entertainment options. However, most students stay on campus due to the distance and heavy workload, contributing to the "Stanford bubble." Overall, Stanford offers great opportunities, but you need to find your niche to make the most of it.... 5. #4 Best Colleges for International Relations in AmericaTufts UniversityMedford, MA·4 Year·Rating 3.7 out of 5 1,076 reviewsFreshman: Tufts is an excellent school with lots of freedom to explore your passions. The professors are excellent and care about each student individually. There are lots of clubs to choose from and people are always welcoming. The campus vibe is very nice and laid back generally. Everyone is very passionate about some subject which is inspiring to be around. The dining halls are not amazing but Kindelvan and the other cafes are very convenient. Some of the activities can be hard to join as freshmen because it can be competitive but gets easier to get involved in later years. The dorms are not fancy but they certainly aren’t bad in general. People are quirky and a little nerdy but it keeps it interesting. In my experience, financial aid is also one of the best available. Overall I highly recommend going to Tufts!... 11. #9 Best Colleges for International Relations in AmericaUniversity of Michigan - Ann ArborAnn Arbor, MI·4 Year·Rating 3.96 out of 5 4,730 reviewsSophom*ore: Entering college, I was head-over-heels excited to attend my dream school: University of Michigan. What I did not realize were the many factors that came along with starting this new path of life -- living away from home, party culture, the football game frenzy, endless schoolwork, and the underlying pressure of having to make connections and network with others. Although these aspects seemed as though they were going to slowly but surely destroy me, I found great solace in studying (and the occasional bi-weekly matcha latte from Sweetwaters:)). The vast amount of resources in any field from ballet to biochemistry was something truly unique and a gift for someone interested in a multidisciplinary career like me. Further the research opportunities available to even first year students were abundant in every field. One thing I would like to see change is the resources available for people struggling to make friends and find a community. However, I hope my experience improves!... However, I had adjusted to the quarter system and found my place at the college. UChicago academics have impressed me, even with the required core classes. The professors I have met so far all appear to be enthusiastic about their specific fields, and they can be especially helpful outside of class. Given that our campus is located within a neighborhood, there are plenty of community activities and restaurants that students can hang out at, such as a Mexican-Korean restaurant called Seoul Taco. There are multiple dormitory buildings on campus, and the southern one is especially convenient as it has a dining hall, gym, and a small store all in one general place. There are also plenty of clubs, called RSOs, ranging from many types of activities like boxing or Japanese drum practice (Taiko). I would like more transportation options to explore.... 18. #16 Best Colleges for International Relations in AmericaUniversity of VirginiaCharlottesville, VA·4 Year·Rating 3.92 out of 5 2,419 reviewsAlum: I entered the school wanting a medium-sized town-and-gown experience and got what I wanted. The lack of diversity or meaningful connection to a typical metropolitan population was shocking at first. On a purely anthropological level, the mix and contrast of highly educated, milquetoast upper crust Americans with first generation scholarship students who know the struggle was enlightening. Greek life was overwhelming as someone who wasn't a part of it, yet they had far too much say about university matters for organizations that were ultimately self-serving. For some, the insular grounds can be comforting and grounding while for others, it will be suffocating and claustrophobic. As someone who enjoyed the Blue Ridge Mountains and local specialties, every season brought a treat. That's enough. I've had both irreplaceable and regrettable memories that come with being a college student far from home. If UVA could change for the better, I'd be more optimistic about the nation.... UCLA just presents a lot of diversity in terms of the experiences that you can have. You can get your party fix in on Thursdays at frat row, kickbacks through cultural or professional organizations, or even a warehouse rave in the Arts District. Academically, there are plenty of opportunities for research and internships. It can be difficult to get into certain classes until you are in your 3rd or 4th year, though. I'm class of 2026, so I've been on campus for about two years now and each year, I've been able to meet some of the best professors and even better people. Conversations with peers are just as nuanced as the people and although the campus could still do with some diversity, I think we're definitely on the better end (I say this as a half Black and half-Asian student from a very predominantly white town). I've found that it's really easy to make friends because the campus and class sizes are so small (that being said, I'm also more extroverted). However, even my more introverted friends have said that they were eventually able to find close friends as their first or second year progressed -- the key is to be involved in campus or go to events and intentionally talk to people and reach out.... The urban campus, deeply embedded in NYC, offers unique connections to the city's core communities, enhancing academic and professional experiences. NYU's lively and diverse student communities, such as the LGBTQ+ Center and the Center for Multicultural Education and Programs, have been influential, creating a welcoming and inclusive environment. Academically, NYU excels in providing rich research opportunities, including the Dean's Undergraduate Research Fund (DURF) and the Undergraduate Research Conference. 24. #22 Best Colleges for International Relations in AmericaPomona CollegeClaremont, CA·4 Year·Rating 4.23 out of 5 425 reviewsJunior: After three challenging, exciting, and transformational years at Pomona, I feel that I can confidently say that I wouldn't want to have studied anywhere else, and I'm already mourning that I'll have to leave this place after next year. Pomona maintains a truly unique culture among elite higher education. Students here are bright and academically top-notch, sure, but, more importantly, they are genuinely curious about the world, open-minded, and passionate about knowledge and justice. I have been challenged academically and personally, and grown more than I could have imagined as a result. The school has its problems, of course: for one, the administration is opaque and unresponsive to student needs. But the dedicated faculty, laidback California atmosphere, and student body more than make up for them. If you are given the opportunity to study here, seriously consider it: you will grow as a student and as a person.... 26. #24 Best Colleges for International Relations in AmericaCarnegie Mellon UniversityPittsburgh, PA·4 Year·Rating 3.71 out of 5 1,483 reviewsFreshman: Carnegie Mellon University suits those who believe in working hard, working hard, and playing hard occasionally. The academics are demanding and challenging, which ultimately creates dedicated, disciplined students, or burnout. I also love that CMU is very invested in their student's success: it is easy to get help from academic advisors, pursue research positions, and take interesting opportunities to get your education outside the classroom. Overall, I am very proud and happy that I came here :)....
