"We've got competition for him, there’s no doubt. But I think with the environment that we’ve created and where we want to be next season, we’ll never be able to get to the level of finance that some clubs are getting to.

"There’s a couple in the Championship that are massively outgunning us. But we hope to get that over the line in terms of what we want to do, progression, who we’re trying to sign, the boys we've already signed and the environment that we’re creating.

"Paul’s on holiday now. We’re hopeful we’ll get an answer in the next 48 hours from Paul and then we need to sort a few things out but we’re really, really hopeful.”

'Very football crazy'

By Mark Walker

Giovanni van Bronckhorst has revealed Besitkas reminded him of Rangers - and that is why he chose to come out of the football wilderness.

The former Light Blues boss ended his spell without a dugout role after being without a job since leaving Ibrox in November 2022.

During his time in Glasgow he guided Rangers to the Europa League Final - narrowly losing out in a heartbreaking penalty shootout defeat to Bundesliga side Frankkurt - and now he will look to revive Besiktas, with the Istanbul outfit finishing a distant sixth last term.

He explained: "A lot has happened in the past year and a half, but I only wanted to start talking if I really enjoyed something and got energy from it. Besiktas is in such a club in every respect. They have a large following and play in a great stadium, in a city where they are very football crazy.

"Rangers, Barcelona, Arsenal and Feyenoord. All clubs I have been involved with and they all have the same image and culture. Besiktas are the same. They are always playing at the top of the league and must win prizes.

"They are a club I have always looked out for. I said no earlier in the season, but kept in touch with them. It gathered momentum quickly and this time I said yes."

Marcus Rashford has been urged to quit Man United.

And former Arsenal star Bacary Sagna would love to see him at the Emirates.

Rahsford has not enjoyed a good season at Old Trafford, lacking form and being dropped for discipline issues. PSG are long-time admirers but Sagna reckons the Gunners and Rashford would be a perfect fit.

I think if you added Rashford to Arsenal’s attack, with the pace that he has, Arsenal would destroy the opposition. Adding Rashford to an extremely talented squad would be a frightening prospect for Arsenal’s rivals.

I would love to see Marcus Rashford at Arsenal. Rashford is so quick. I think having Rashford would enable Arsenal to have more variety in attack and I would love to see Gabriel Jesus and Marcus Rashford in the same team, pressing with so much intensity.

Gray's no yes man

Hibs needed to appoint a manager to bring the whole club back together because in the 25 years since I broke through in Leith I’d say there’s never been a bigger disconnect with the supporters.

And that’s a worrying admission given some of what’s gone on in that time. Easter Road should be rocking but for too long the atmosphere has been shocking and I’ve said for a couple of seasons now that apathy has bee sweeping around the place. Season ticket holders have been getting to the stage they can’t be bothered going to games and that says it all.

David Gray’s appointment can sort that. I’m certain of it. He has the respect of the fans first and foremost. He is a Scottish Cup winning legend, a popular figure around the club and he is exactly the right type of no-nonsense character needed to sort this team out. READ MORE

Rangers in safe hands says Barry

The rest of us are about to put the world on pause. Over the course of the next month or so it will probably begin to feel as if we’re spending our whole lives at the Euros.

But, behind the scenes at Rangers, these next three or four weeks could be the busiest and most important time of the year.

Because if my old club doesn’t get its business done in the transfer market as quickly as possible then they could find themselves up against it before a ball has even been kicked next season.

The good news is that, as far as I can see, the people in charge at Ibrox know exactly what’s required. There’s no danger of chairman John Bennett putting his feet up and watching what’s going on in Germany when there’s so much for him to attend to.

Bennett has already stepped up to take over the responsibilities as chief executive after James Bisgrove left the club for life-changing money in Saudi Arabia. READ MORE
